A Hebrew Catholic Perspective

Based on the composition of Fr. Lessius. S.J.

Thursday Evening
(Before retiring or during the night)

Lord Jesus Christ, the Annointed One, the Chosen One,
We solemnly recall at this time:

You were prostrate in prayer;
Resigned to the will of your Father;
Weighed down by the immense weight of our sins;
Sorrowing with unutterable grief, even unto death;
Already enduring in spirit the torments you had to undergo;
In your agony, drenched with a bloody sweat;
Receiving comfort from an angel;
Going forth to meet your enemies;
Betrayed with a kiss by Judas;
Bound by the soldiers;
Forsaken by your disciples;
Brought before Annas and Caiphas;
Struck with a blow by a servant;
Accused by false witness;
Held to be guilty of death;
Your eyes blindfolded;
Beaten and struck on your sacred face;
Your body given to the strikers;
Denied by Peter Three times.

O Lord Jesus Christ, our Rabbi, our Messiah,
to you we offer all these sorrows; for these we thank you,
We praise and bless you, through them all,
We implore you, have mercy on us.
Amen

Friday Morning: 6 a.m.

Lord Jesus Christ, the Annointed One, the Chosen One,
We solemnly recall at this time:

You were condemned at morn by the Council;
Bound and delivered over to Pilate;
Accused by a clique of Jewish Authorities;
Answering all their accusations by a wonderful silence;
Led bound to Herod;
By Herod interrogated with many impertinent questions;
Scoffed at and mocked by Herod and his soldiers;
Clad in a white garment;
Sent back to Pilate.

O Lord Jesus Christ, our Rabbi, our Messiah,
to you I offer all these sorrows; for these I thank you,
I praise and bless you, through them all,
I implore you, have mercy on me.
Amen

Friday: 9 a.m.

Lord Jesus Christ, the Annointed One, the Chosen One,
We solemnly recall at this time:

You were condemned to the scourges;
Stripped of your garments;
Bound naked to the pillar;
Most cruelly scourged with stripes;
Bruised for our sins;
Tormented with most bitter pains;
Your whole body covered with blood;
Treated as a vile slave;
Allowed to put on your garments;
Again stripped of them;
Clad with a scarlet cloak;
Crowned with thorns;
Mocked with a reed for a sceptre;
Hailed, in bitter mockery, by some, as King of the Jews.
Your face spat upon;
And hit with blows;
Your head struck with a reed;
Filled with sorrows and reproaches;
In this guise led forth;
Shown to be gazed at by the rabble;
Reputed as a leper and as one struck by God;
With loud cries, demanded for the Cross;
Esteemed inferior to Barabbas;
Condemned to a most cruel and shameful death;
Delivered to the will of those in power;
Weighed down by the weight of the Cross;
Led as an innocent lamb to the slaughter.

O Lord Jesus Christ, our Rabbi, our Messiah,
to you we offer all these sorrows; for these we thank you,
We praise and bless you, through them all,
We implore you, have mercy on us.
Amen

Friday: 12 Noon

Lord Jesus Christ, the Annointed One, the Chosen One,
We solemnly recall at this time:

Yet again You were stripped of your garments;
Stretched naked upon the gibbet of the Cross;
Fastened to the Cross with nails through your most
blessed hands and feet;
Wounded for our iniquities;
Your whole body violently and cruelly stretched;
Tortured with most sharp pains;
Raised on high in keenest agony on the Cross;
Your blood flowing in four copious streams;
Your arms extended to welcome sinners.

O Lord Jesus Christ, our Rabbi, our Messiah,
to you we offer all these sorrows; for these we thank you,
We praise and bless you, through them all,
We implore you, have mercy on us.
Amen

Friday: 3 p.m.

Lord Jesus Christ, the Annointed One, the Chosen One,
We solemnly recall at this time:

You were crucified between two thieves;
Reputed with the wicked;
Made the reproach of men;
Blasphemed by those that passed by;
Derided by the rabble;
Mocked on the Cross by the Roman soldiers;
By one of the thieves insolently insulted;
Filled with reproaches;
In the midst of such pains and reproaches entreating your
Father for your enemies;
Promising Paradise to the repentant thief;
You gave to your own Mother St. John for a son;
And made known your abandonment by your Father;
Who was given vinegar and gall to drink;
And declared that all things written of you had been fulfilled;
Who commended your spirit into your Father’s hands;
And was heard for your reverence by your Father;
Made obedient even unto the death of the Cross;
Pierced with the lance;
From Your side issuing blood and water;
By Whose bruises we are healed;
The Person by whom we are made at one with the Father.

O Lord Jesus Christ, our Rabbi, our Messiah,
to you we offer all these sorrows;
for these we thank you,
We praise and bless you, through them all,
We implore you, have mercy on us.
Amen

Friday Evening
(Before Sunset)

Lord Jesus Christ, the Annointed One, the Chosen One,
We solemnly recall at this time:

You were taken down from the Cross

Received into the arms of your Mother;
Bewailed with many tears by your stricken friends;
O Mary you were in bitter sorrow with your friends.

O Lord Jesus Christ, our Rabbi, our Messiah,
to you I offer all these sorrows; for these I thank you,
I praise and bless you, through them all,
I implore you, have mercy on me.
Amen

Friday Night
(Before retiring)

Lord Jesus Christ, the Annointed One, the Chosen One,
We solemnly recall at this time:

You were wrapped up in clean linen cloth;
Borne to the sepulchre;
Buried;
O Mary, you wept with your friends;
Awaiting the resurrection of your most beloved Son.

O Lord Jesus Christ, our Rabbi, our Messiah,
to you we offer all these sorrows;
for these we thank you,
We praise and bless you, through them all,
We implore you, have mercy on us.
Amen.

Blessed are You, Lord our God,
King of the universe, Who gave His Son
to die for our sin and to be the
restoration of all humanity in His image.

Blessed be God forever!

Amen
